Mesa Verde hosts artist, free programs

Mesa Verde National Park will host painter Carol Chamberland of Albuquerque as its artist in residence through Sept. 30.

Two free public programs will be offered during her stay:

Chamberland will discuss the influence of public lands on her work from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mancos Public Library, 211 E. First St., Mancos. Slides of her paintings and explorations will be shown.A 2.4-mile trail-side drawing hike along Petroglyph Point Trail will be offered from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 29, starting in the lobby of Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum at Mesa Verde. Participants will examine geology and sketch at the petroglyph panel, where Chamberland will give drawing tips. Those who attend should bring water, hiking shoes or boots, a hat and hiking poles if needed. Drawing materials will be supplied.For more information, call 529-4445 or visit
